Has it ever happened to you that you accomplished something you thought was going to be very challenging?

But you gave it a try anyway and you succeeded? Do you remember how it made you feel? Pretty good, I bet. I’m sure it has happened to just about everyone. And when it does it gives us such a boost of confidence. We almost feel invincible.

I’m willing to bet a major player in the success you experienced was your attitude. There’s a saying that “Attitude is everything”. It may not be entirely true but attitude certainly is important because the way you approach anything can have a serious influence on how successful you are. According to the baseball player Wade Boggs, “a positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes. It is a catalyst and it sparks extraordinary results”.

Think about that for a second.

If you embark on any endeavor with the attitude you are going to hate it…you likely will. Go into the same venture thinking you will enjoy it, and you probably will.

Similarly, if you go into any venture thinking it will fail, it probably will. If you embark on the same venture with the expectation and belief it will succeed, it most likely will.

So you can be confronted with the exact same challenge but have completely different outcomes and the only difference is your attitude.

And here’s one reason why.

Anyone who anticipates a negative outcome is inadvertently helping to bring it about simply through their attitude. Having a negative attitude is going to have an impact on their level of commitment and level of effort.

It’s also going to have an impact on how we view the outcome. Maybe it won’t be perfect, but with the right attitude we will see the outcome as being positive as opposed to negative.

When people go through life with a negative attitude they quite naturally attract other negative people. Then everything in their life becomes negative, which only serves to reinforce their beliefs. When good things happen they either don’t notice them because it doesn’t meet with their version of reality or they just write them off as quirks of nature.

Most of us don’t go through life as a negative Nellie but we can have our moments where we act and feel like things are going to turn out badly. And I am here to tell you why you must never do that because it can have an influence on the outcome of the event.

Your success in any endeavor very much depends upon your attitude towards it. If you evaluate a situation and decide that it’s too hard or there is no point in even trying, your subconscious mind will respond accordingly. As far as the subconscious mind is concerned, if you consider something to be hopeless, then it MUST be hopeless and it will not waste any resources on the task.

But if your evaluation of a situation is that it is difficult but with a bit of hard work and perseverance, it can be accomplished, your subconscious mind is going to react accordingly. It will summon up resources of energy to help get the job done. It will scan your memory banks looking for a solution on how to overcome the challenge.

So, the next time you are confronted with a challenging situation, no matter how difficult it might seem, do not look at it and throw your hands up in despair and say “I can’t do it”, because if you believe you can’t do something, then you most definitely can’t.

But it goes beyond dealing with life’s most difficult challenges. You can use the same approach with just about any task or challenge you encounter in life. You can help yourself enormously just by maintaining a positive upbeat attitude and feeding yourself positive self-talk. Doing so will help you accomplish just about any task you are presented with.

And this works equally well with events. Got an event you have to attend but not looking forward to it? Try changing your attitude towards it. Look for the positives. You might as well if you have to go anyway.
