“The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.” – Michelangelo
What would your reaction be if a friend told you they were going on a journey but they had no idea where they were going or how they were going to get there? You would think they were joking, right?
Yet that is how many people live their lives. They have no vision for their future, no goals in life and no idea of what direction their life is heading. They simply follow the path that life lays in front of them to see where it takes them.
The problem with that approach is where they end up may not be where they want to go.
Every great business has a vision, the beauty of which is that it drives everything that happens in the business. It helps ensure all business decisions are in line with the company’s vision on where it wants to go and what it wants to become. On the flip side it ensures no time or effort (or money) is wasted pursuing things that don’t.
We would be well advised to follow the same approach and have a vision for our life because if we did, it would add the same degree of focus to everything that happens in our life, all our major decisions and actions would be designed to help us get to where we want to go.
How many of us ever stop to think about the fact that where we are now is the end result of all the decisions, thoughts, words, actions (and lack of actions)…they all led us to this point?
And if you think about it, the same things that got you to where you are now can be used to get you to where you WANT to go.
With a vision of where you want to go, you could start to align your thoughts, words, decisions and actions to get you to that desired end state. And you would KNOW when things were getting off the rails.
Now I am not suggesting you sit down and write out a vision statement for your life, similar to a business’s vision statement, but what I am suggesting is that you write out your major life goal, where you want to go in life, who you want to become and what you want to accomplish.
It would be your dream statement.
The beauty of writing things down is that it forces us to think clearly and focus. It’s easy to have a vague notion in our mind of what we want to do in life; it becomes harder when we are staring at a blank piece of paper and we have to write it down in clear concise terms. In our mind, our vision might be that we want to become successful, but successful at what? Your dream in vague terms might be that you want to be wealthy. Okay, but how?
Once it is written down, start putting together a written plan on how you can get from where you are now to where you want to go. Refer to it often and write out ideas that come to mind on how to help you accomplish that thing you most desire in life.
Having a clearly articulated goal forces us to get specific; something like “I want to become a successful manufacturer of high quality furniture”. Okay NOW we have something we can work with. Now we can start plotting out how we are going to get there. Maybe we can start out with a small shop in the garage and build from there. We’ll establish a website online and showcase our products and build from there.
Writing things down brings clarity to your life. It helps to focus your mind on that thing you most desire in life and once your mind is focused on an objective, it starts aligning everything else in your life to help bring you closer to that reality. It starts looking for a solution on how it can get you to that desired end state.
Writing things down also helps to ensure you don’t forget those moments of brilliance we all have. And let’s be clear about something here: those eureka moments don’t just randomly happen for no particular reason; they happen exactly because your mind has been quietly working in the background while you were sleeping or relaxing looking for a solution and now it is presenting one to you.
The other thing that will happen once you have clearly articulated your dream statement is you should become excited about it and you should feel your energy and drive start to soar. You should also feel yourself compelled to start taking action towards bringing that dream into reality. The degree to which you will become excited about your dream and driven to take action is directly related to how inspirational your dream is.
Always remember you can accomplish anything you want in life. You just have to believe in yourself and have confidence in your abilities.
